What is Rotary?

Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. Members of Rotary clubs, known as Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

There are 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Clubs are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. As signified by the motto "Service Above Self," Rotary’s main objective is service — in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world.

Paul P. Harris, the founder of Rotary, organized the first Rotary Club in Chicago, Illinois in 1905.

The Rotary Club of Miami operates through four major committees:

1. Club Service - supervises and coordinates classification, membership, programs, fellowship, information, and any other committee to help the club operate well.

2. Vocational Service - creates and effects plans to improve business standards, increase member interest in their callings, and create better relationships in member vocations. Jose Garcia is the Vocational Service Director this year.

3. Community Service - devises and effects plans to awaken each member to a keener appreciation of his or her obligation to society, a more constructive interest in community betterments, and a greater readiness to cooperate in every effort for the common good. Scott Richey is the Community Service Director this year.

4. International Service - seeks to promote understanding and the spirit of friendliness, tolerance, and cooperation among all peoples and thus develop the world-mindedness which is vital in creating universal good will. Marcos Menendez is the International Service Director this year.

Brief History:

The Rotary Club of Miami, the oldest and second largest club in the state of Florida, was organized on December 1, 1916 and chartered on March 1, 1917.  The first Club President was Dr. James M. Jackson (for whom Jackson Memorial Hospital was named).  Many prestigious community leaders have been or currently are members of our club.
