Announcements:
Rotary University is coming up on August 25th, which offers free training on membership, Foundation, and public image. Included in public image will be hashtags and why they are important and Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. There will be experts teaching this so we should avail ourselves us of this opportunity. A signup sheet was passed around to arrange for carpooling for those who want it;
District Governor Drew Monaghan will be making his official visit on Thursday, August 9, 2018 to our club and will be attending the board meeting preceding the lunch meeting. Please come to listen to his enthusiastic message;
Every Rotarian is expected to give at least $100 to the Rotary International Foundation in a program known as EREY (Every Rotarian Every Year). If you haven’t made your EREY contribution yet, bring a check to a meeting in August marked “EREY”, payable to the Rotary Club of Miami, Florida Foundation.

Marcia Brod announced her Tribe of Scribes, a group of volunteer scribes from our club who, along with Marcia, will be alternating taking notes of the lunch meetings for the Rote: Linda Singer, Amelia Bonilla, Robert Bull, and Shirley Pardon. If you would like to be a scribe, contact Marcia;
Randy Lichtman welcomed Jessica Murillo and invited her to address us. Jessica talked about how Interact has been an inspiration to her and how it has impacted her life;
Phil Seipp announced that Diane Landsberg and he, representing our club, attended the medical school’s 10th annual White Coat Ceremony on Saturday at Florida International University. Phil and Norm Kassoff went to visit Tim Ryan at the latter’s home yesterday. He is resting after his hospitalization and hopes to attend the next meeting;
Brian Tschirhart was happy to have returned from the Bahamas;
Norby Rudel used the opportunity to address the City of Miami Police Department executives to speak about his extensive experience in training law enforcement officers;
Linda Singer reported that yesterday Dave Skinner, Diane Landsberg and she, on behalf of our club, attended a meeting of the Girl Scout Troop at the Black Police Precinct and Courthouse Museum in the Overtown neighborhood, and distributed backpacks and school supplies to the Girl Scouts, who range in age from 5 through 13. Contact Diane if you would like to help with the Girl Scout Troop.
INDUCTION OF HONORARY MEMBER:
Jorge Colina, Chief of Police of the City of Miami Police Department was installed by Norm Kassoff as an honorary member of our club. We are honored to have him be a part of our club.
OUR SPEAKER was introduced by Norm Kassoff:
Jorge Colina, Chief of Miami Police, spoke to us about how happy he is to be Chief of Police after serving for 28 years in the department. He served in each of the department’s divisions and would develop his ideas about how to make the police department better. He is glad to have the opportunity to implement his ideas to transform the department. His goal is to make Miami the safest city in the United States. The department has implemented virtual surveillance of public areas of the city to detect the occurrence and location of gun shots. The City of Miami Police Department has youth programs, such as the Police Athletic League, which is having its Gala on September 15, 2018.

Robert Bull sold $67 of 50/50 tickets today, creating a pot of $113. Tanya Lowe picked a losing card but will have $25 of the ticket sales contributed to EREY in her name. The pot next week starts at $88.
