The Miami Yacht Club
President Dave Skinner called the meeting to order. Marcia Brod gave an invocation and Angel Rodriguez led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.
Guests and Visitors were introduced by Robin Shelley:
- Carlo Cappabianca and wife Maria Pia visited from the Rotary club Trapani-Erice in Sicily;
- Phillipe Villette visited from our sister club, Paris Champs-Elysees. Phillipe invited everyone to come and visit them in Paris.
Announcements:
- May 9th meeting has been rescheduled as a joint meeting with the Miami Senior High Interact club on Friday evening, May 10th at 6:30 PM at Diane Landsberg’s home;
- May 15th Lighthouse for the Blind - Music Under the Stars. The club will reimburse you for one half of your ticket purchase if you attend;
- Phil Seipp announced that notices to renew membership will be sent out shortly. He would appreciate a quick response so he can send out individual statements.

- Marcia Brod was happy that her daughter’s wedding went so well;
- Phil Seipp is VERY happy that the account was finally closed at Wells Fargo and deposited in BB&T;
- Robin Shelley was happy that his daughter was graduating with honors from UF;
- Linda Singer is so happy to get to visit with all her friends!
- Norby Rudel is excited that Angel Rodriguez will be the head of the Armed Service committee. Also, Angela & Amelia will co-chair for Interact.
Program:
Our speaker today is Richard Hall, Commodore of the Miami Yacht Club
Richard gave a lively and informative talk on the Yacht Club from its early beginnings in 1927, started by a group of fishermen.
The Club was incorporated in 1932 and then named Miami Yacht Club.
Watson Island is a spoil island built from the material dredged from the creation of Government Cut.
He read snippets of articles from the ‘80s and ‘90s where various organizations were going to build massive projects on the island - almost nothing has yet materialized!
The MYC has a rich history with sailing and boat races, many of which still exist today, the Miami to Key Largo being the most popular – everyone brings their boat!
The club sits on City land and has a 99 year lease. Unless the government wants the land for a major development and cancels the lease –they will be operating their highly successful children’s sailing programs plus the marina, for many years to come. Mr. Hall returned to the MYC after a short hiatus and is enjoying overseeing all the activities and events that the club is involved in.

$850 was carried over with $56 added today. Tickets were drawn by Diane Landsberg. The
first number drawn was Rick Miller – but no Ace of Spades! Sorry Rick.
