The Rote – December 10, 2020
Midday Meeting via ZOOM
President Robert Bull welcomed everyone to our December 10th meeting. He hoped everyone is enjoying our “cool” weather. This year has been the warmest weather in recorded history, until this week. This week we had forty people attending our meeting, including six guests.
Jay Almeida led us with the invocation, and Phil Seipp recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
Today is National Lager Day, so enjoy a good lager. Cheers!
Tonight is the First Night of Chanukkah. The festival of light and religious freedom. Hag Hanukkah Sameah!
We had two potential new Members visit our meeting: Agathe Padovani and Yolanda Gaston. They introduced themselves. Agathe has visited us before and she lives in Miami but is originally from Corsica, France. Yolanda also has visited us before, her mother is a Rotarian in Haiti and she was a Rotaractor in MDC North Campus.
Announcements:
- Phil Seipp updated us on the GBI Rx project. We are raising funds and have received donations from several Members, and just received donations from many individuals and other Rotary Clubs.
- November was The Rotary Foundation Month. Rotary’s goal amongst the Membership is for Every Rotarian to contribute Every Year. EREY. Water and Sanitation is one of Rotary’s Areas of Focus. Access to clean water, which to in the USA, we take for granted, but in other countries that may not be the case. Thousands of children needless die every year due to lack of clean water. Rotary is addressing this issue.
- Every year our District conducts a Golf Ball Drop event. Each golf ball costs $25 and on the day of the Golf Ball drop at the Biltmore Golf Course a helicopter will fly over and drop all of the purchased golf balls. The ones nearest the pin win. You may get your golf balls from Robbin Shelley or Phil Seipp.
- Jay Almeida showed us the latest video of our in-house Honorary Italian, Norby Rubel. Norby’s video for the District competition for the best video on the Four-Way Test.
- Noreen Timoney updated us on the Community Service Committee activities and Noreen then introduced our speaker, Ms. Bea L. Hines, a nationally recognized journalist. Ms. Hines started her career in the Miami Herald, originally as a clerk but she broke racial barriers and became the first female journalist of color. Ms. Hines was recognized as our Distinguished Citizen. As such, she was able to designate a charity to receive a donation. Her presentation was inspiring.
After her presentation, Robert Bull virtually presented Ms. Bea Hines her Certificate of Appreciation and let her know that we will also be delivering dictionaries to third graders.
- This week’s Happy Dollars were as follows: Patty Urban was happy because she is helping a little boy receive medical support. Diane Landsberg, Marcia Brod, Jimmy Smiley, and Priscilla Dames were happy to hear Ms. Hines’ presentation. Amelia Bonilla was happy that the FIU Rotaract Club is having their pinning ceremony shortly. Agathe Padovani was happy because she just released a new book, “Get Your Yoga On: 30 Days to Build a Practice That Fits Your Body and Your Life“. Noreen Timoney and Angela Deggs were happy with Ms. Hine’s presentation. Norby Rudel was happy because this Sunday he will be performing at VINO’S in the Grove. Robin Shelley was happy because of Ms. Hines’ presentation and he is recovering from his accidental fall.
- Robert Bull advised that our next meeting will be a Happy Hour on TUESDAY, December 15th starting at 5:30 PM. Bring your GOOD CHEER.
After Happy Dollars, Bunny Uriarte led us in the Four-Way Test and then President Robert Bull ran the bell to end our meeting.
