The Rote for July 28, 2022
The Deck at Island Gardens
Even the hot and muggy Miami summer could not hinder the enthusiastic welcome to our Rotarians by the members of the World Affairs Council of Miami. As the sun set and the cool drinks and delicious hors d’oeuvres were enjoyed, lively conversation was followed by a brief talk from president Aaron Rosen. He said this was the first anniversary of the WAC of Miami which is part of a national organization which is an independent, nonpartisan organization dedicated to engaging the public and leading global voices to better understand the world. It is mostly a younger group and they were very interested in learning about Rotary and the role it plays in the world. President Brian gave a brief history about some of the impact Rotarians have had in shaping Miami and with supporting international projects of R.I. Many cards and contact information were exchanged to enable future interaction and activities with each other. A few expressed interest in joining Rotary. We have even invited their president to come to our club as a speaker in the future.
When the evening was over we all agreed The Deck would be a great venue for a future gathering of our club or of a district event. It is our goal to organize fun and interesting social events throughout the year. It provides opportunities to socialize with one another and develop valuable friendships.
August 4th at the Miami Yacht Club:
Our speaker this week is Taylor Majher of the Peace Corps

Taylor Majher is the Peace Corps regional recruiter for universities and community organizations in the greater Miami, South Florida area. She served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the agricultural sector in Guatemala from 2018—2020. Taylor is a graduate of the University of Iowa, from where she has a Bachelor of Science in Human Physiology and minor in Spanish. Taylor continues to stay excited as part of the volunteer and recruitment team, and hopes to motivate many individuals in the greater Miami territory to apply for an opportunity of a lifetime.
Taylor will speak about the relationship between the Peace Corps and Rotary International.
August 25th Social Event:
Our next social event is the Poseidon Sunset cruise on August 25th. We have arranged to debit the prepaid account for members and their guest. To “sweeten” the deal, we’re pleased to inform you the owner of Fookems Fabulous Key Lime Pies, Joshua Abril, wants to donate 40 single packaged slices of his famous pies on the ferry cruise next month. He also plans to buy $25 tickets for his girlfriend and he to attend the event with our Club’s members. We are working on other ways to enhance the event. More details coming soon! Invite someone too!
