Speaker:

Past President Oliver Ruiz introduced our speaker today: Dr. James E. Galvin, a professor of psychiatry and neurology at UM Health in Boca Raton. He is Chief of Cognitive Disorder Services Palm Beach and Director of Comprehensive Center for Brain Health.

His focus is on brain health and reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s. He explained that dementia is not a diagnosis but a description of a problem that can be caused by Alzheimer’s or other disorders. Here are some of the highlights of his excellent presentation:

  • By age 85, 60% of Americans will NOT have dementia.

  • Primary prevention looks at how to stop dementia from ever happening. Secondary prevention studies how to stop people who have brain changes from getting dementia. Tertiary prevention is to help those with dementia to have a better life. He recommends that those with Alzheimer’s participate in medical research studies.

  • 40% of brain vulnerability is lifestyle-induced. The remainder is affected by gender (women are more at risk), genetic inheritances, and education.

  • He emphasized how to make our brains more resilient through:

    • Physical activity, including aerobic, flexibility and resistance training. Just walking three times weekly for 30 minutes helps.

    • Cognitive activity is enhanced by the MIND Diet, a combination of the Mediterranean Diet with the DASH diet; and by practicing mindfulness, which is just living in the moment.

    • Living in an area where there are many trees may enhance brain health.

4-Way Test

The meeting closed with a recitation of the 4-Way Test of the things we think, say or do led by Randy Lichtman.
