President Norby Rudel called the meeting to order.

Norm Kassoff gave a special 9/11 commemorative speech and invocation. Norm recounted how he was a volunteer for FEMA after 9/11/2001 for 184 days in New York City to coordinate volunteers from all over the country. Norm then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests were introduced by Diane Landsberg and visiting Rotarian, Jocelyn Belizaire, who introduced other Rotarians from her Rotary Club of Petion Ville, Haiti, who are:

Jeam Herve Landrin, the current president and founder of the Rotary Club of Petion Ville, Haiti; and Nessim Izmery. Jocelyn is the past president of The Rotary Club of Petion Ville and is currently a Haitian ambassador. She will be helping to establish a Rotary Club in Little Haiti in Miami.

Birthdays and Anniversaries:

Norm’s birthday of Sept. 4th was recognized.

Happy $$$$$$$$$$$$$ were collected by Cathy Cahill:

  • Cathy Cahill was happy to be at our meeting today.

  • Randy Lichtman announced upcoming events of the Miami Dade College Rotaract Club.

  • Amelia Bonilla had a great time at the community service event at PACE Center on September 13th and happy that her son just celebrated his third birthday.

  • Robin Shelley appreciated Norm’s imparting his history in volunteering for FEMA after 9/11/2001 and expressed gratitude for all the first responders.

  • Jocelyn Belizaire was happy to bring her club president and member to visit our club.

  • Norby Rudel is happy to assist with the Soccer Clinic happening on September 15th and reported that our club donated soccer balls to each participant.

  • Jeam Herve Landrin was happy to assist in creating a club that is moving forward and is developing a water project through Rotary in Haiti.

  • Jay Almeida was relieved that we did not get Hurricane Dorian and cautioned us to keep an eye out on the tropical disturbances in the Atlantic. He praised Norm.

  • Nessim Izmery was happy to be here.

Announcements:

Diane Landsberg reminded members to fill out their volunteer logs for their July and August volunteer hours spent anywhere. She sent out the logs earlier this week by email. Please complete them and return them to her.

Robert Bull reminded us that on November 7, 2019, our club will participate in the Heart Walk; and on November 16, 2019 there will be the Alzheimer’s’ walk which our club will participate in to commemorate Carol Kassoff.

Speaker

Tim Ryan introduced our speaker, Tom Dixon, a member of The Rotary Club of Coral Gables who does commercial real estate brokerage and residential and commercial tax appeals for Dixon Commercial Real Estate, Inc.

Tom spoke about negotiating. In negotiating, it is important to understand why the parties want something and when they want it. He shared a great deal of sage negotiating tactics with us both orally and in the written handout which follows.

50/50

Jan Viga sold the 50/50 tickets. $242 of tickets was sold today, creating a pot of $2,641. With nine cards left to pick from, Randy Lichtman narrowed the odds and created future revenue for the club and the eventual winner by picking a losing card, but will have $25 of the ticket sales contributed to EREY in his name. The pot next week starts at $2,616. Bring your money to buy tickets!
