Speaker
Michael Pearson spoke on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Association and educated us about the disease. He said that Alzheimer’s is a disease that leads to dementia. It is in the brain for one to three decades before signs and symptoms appear.
Warning signs of Alzheimer’s include:
- Memory loss that disrupts daily life.
- Challenges in planning or solving problems.
- Difficulty completing a familiar task.
- Confusion with time or place.
- Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships.
- New problems with words in speaking or writing.
- Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace one’s steps.
- Decreased or poor judgment.
- Withdrawal from work or social activities.
- Changes in mood or personality.
People over 65 should get a cognitive wellness evaluation by their primary doctors when getting an annual physical examination.
Early detection is important for treatments to relieve symptoms and to enroll in clinical trials. A neurologist is the type of specialist who deals with Alzheimer’s.
The Alzheimer’s Association provides help by phone with a social worker with a master’s in social work.
