The Rote – November 12, 2020

Via Zoom

President Robert Bull welcomed everyone to our Midday Zoom meeting of November 12th, 2020.  October 15th Meeting. There were 30 Members and 2 Guests in attendance..

Former President Jay Almeida gave the invocation and one of our newer Members, Karen Lapekas recited the Pledge of Allegiance.  Since the day before was Veterans Day, both the invocation and the Pledge were very moving.

Announcements:

  • Today is Chicken Soup for the Soul Day.  Considering everything that has been going on in 2020, we could all use a bowl of Chicken Soup.

  • Birthdays: Dunia Miranda (Nov. 9th) and Norys Figuera (Nov. 16th)  had/will have birthdays.  While Don Van Orsdel' s birthday was yesterday on Veterans Day. Happy birthday to all!

  • Phil Seipp updated us on the GBI Rx project.  We are raising funds and yesterday we sent out an email blast to about two thousand people.  Several have responded.  Ron Felton was the first to donate using the PayPal link that was in the email blast.  We need to ask everyone who received the email blast to please forward it to their friends, family and acquaintances. You never know who will assist with this project to help our neighbors in the Grand Bahama Island.

  • This Saturday, November 14th a Virtual Conference, Leading Change in a COVID World will be held.  Norby Rudel gave us an update and we are expecting approximately fifty high school students.  Norby thanked all of the volunteers who are helping with the project.

  • November is also the Rotary Foundation Month.  Rotary’s goal amongst the Membership is for Every Rotarian to contribute Every Year, EREY.  Every year our District conducts a Golf Ball Drop program.  Each golf ball costs $25 and on the day of the Golf Ball Drop at the Biltmore Golf Course a helicopter will fly over and drop all of the purchased golf balls.  The ones nearest the pin, win.  You may get your golf ball tickets from Robbin Shelley

  • November is a very busy month.  Noreen Timoney gave us an update of the Community Service Committee meeting and she followed up with information on the two upcoming Walks. The Walk to END Alzheimer’s is this Saturday, November 14th.  Later in the afternoon an email with detailed instructions for this event will be set out.  The following Saturday, November 21st is the Heart Walk.  We will be sending out an email blast on Monday with sign up information.
  • Happy Dollars – All of the Happy Dollars donations this month will be dedicated toward our Christmas Toy Drive.  We will be supporting the Miami Rescue Mission in their goal to distribute 6,000 new toys to needy children.  Every child should have the joy of receiving a new toy during Christmas.  We will also be supporting their Christmas meals program.
  • Happy Dollars donations were from Linda Singer, who was happy that Noreen Timoney's Community Service Committee went well; Robert Bull congratulated Noreen and Noreen Timoney was happy because she received so much support.  Phil Seipp was happy that the GBI Rx project is going well.  Amelia Bonilla was happy with the Club's updated website.  She invited everyone to visit: www.miamirotary.org

Guest Speaker
Jay Almeida introduced our speaker, Pastor John Churchill, the missions pastor of Christ Journey Church.  Pastor Churchill told us about the work FEED MIAMI has been doing assisting the Food Insecure in our community.  He said that they have eighteen distribution points and he greatly appreciates all of the support FEED MIAMI has received from the Rotary Club of Miami.

Robert Bull presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Pastor John Churchill thanking him for his presentation. Dictionaries will also be given to class of students in his honor.

Lucky Draw

As we are approaching the Christmas Holidays, we are going to have a Lucky Draw on December 3rd for a bottle of ZACAPA RUMZACAPA is one of the best rums in the World and it’s from Guatemala.  We want to thank Dunia Miranda for this donation.  All funds raised for this Lucky Draw will be donated to the Rotary Emergency Committee in Guatemala to help those impacted by Hurricane ETA.

We are selling virtual tickets.  Your name will be placed in a Picker Spin Wheel, the more tickets you buy to more space on the wheel will have your name.  The algorithm of the Picker Spin Wheel will select the winner on December 3rd.  All it takes is one ticket to win.  Remember that Cameron Sisser won the lucky card draw at the Miami Yacht Club when he bought just one ticket.  So send Robert Bull, or Phil Seipp, an email to let us know how many virtual tickets you want.  Good luck.

Cathy Cahill led us with the Four Way Test.

President Robert Bull then rang the bell to conclude the meeting. A great time was had by all. See you zooming next week!!!
