The Miami Yacht Club
President Dave Skinner called the meeting to order. Angela Deggs gave an invocation and Scott Richey led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.
Guests and Visitors:
- Karen Baldwin – is a Teacher and the sister of Diane Stieber.
Announcements
- The May 9th meeting will be changed to May 10th to meet with Interactors;
- May 4th is the Annual Board Retreat. The Current Board will meet followed by the New Board;
- New Member Michael Harper got his Red Badge today. Congratulations Michael!
- Miami Dade College Rotaractors will make a presentation at our club meeting on April 25th.
Happy $$$$$$$$$$$$$ were collected by Oliver Ruiz:
- Susan Shelley received a nice note from a TBM recipient;
- Scott Richey is looking forward to his family going to Orlando for the weekend. Miami Kids Magazine is doing a photoshoot at SeaWorld and his daughter will be on the cover;
- Renel was happy to see friends that he hasn’t seen in a few weeks. He is happy that his friend is the speaker today;
- Cameron Sisser informed us of the Miami Lighthouse Under the Stars event on May 15th. Miami Kids Magazine is the official magazine sponsor. They are working on a fundraiser for a kids eye exam program;
- Jaime Tobin was happy about her speech at the Night of 1000 Paul Harris Fellows. She was thankful for Robin’s advice for staying calm;
- Angela Deggs is happy the club sponsored her to attend the District Assembly;
- Robin Shelley received a note from Lisa David, a TBM recipient. He also shared a story of a Rotary bus sighting in Hamilton, Bermuda. He shared pictures with us of the bus that was full of Rotary plaques;
- Tina Moore was happy to see President David Skinner in a colorful Rotary shirt. She is happy to leave for England for 6 months;
- Norby Rudel is happy that his friend Karla Santos is here. Karla brought a colonoscopy machine and nebulizer for Renel to take to Haiti. Do we know other doctors who have equipment to donate?
- Phil Seipp was happy to see so many people at the meeting. He was also glad to see things looking up in Haiti with the new medical equipment;
- Dave Skinner is happy that his son Neil came down this week and they had dinner at Havana Harry’s. His son had been trying for years to get into the Scripps Institute. He is speaking there today.
Program
Alice Burch on Sustainability, introduction by Renel:
Alice is a community and civic activist and Councilwoman in Miami Shores Village. Miami Shores has a front row seat for the effects of sea-level rise.
- Alice spoke about what South Florida cities are learning about Sustainability;
- NOAA projects a sea level rise of approximately 12 inches by 2030;
- Miami Dade County was chosen by the Rockefeller Foundation to advance progress in this area and perform a SWAT analysis for climate change;
- The South East Florida Climate Change Summit is December 3-5, 2019;
- Our current sea wall structures need to be upgraded, as they don’t last forever;
- Vulnerability assessment for cities is very important;
- Rising tides lifts the water tables for ALL homes, not just waterfront homes.
