The Miami Yacht Club
President Dave Skinner called the meeting to order. Marcia Brod gave an invocation. Angel Rodriguez led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.
Announcements:
- Last Thursday, October 25, a number of club members attended the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind “See the Light” luncheon. Our Club Brunch on October 28 was a rousing success with 50 attendees. Norm Kassoff presented a talk on the history of the polio vaccine. There is more information on our website and also in the October 25 issue of The Rote;
- Don’t miss the November 8 speaker, Ron Magill of Zoo Miami. Ron will really entertain you.
- Mark your calendars!!! Save the date March 28, 2019 for RI President Barry Rassin’s South Florida Visit.
- Julie Heger from the UM Miller School of Medicine DOCS program spoke to us about the program and their upcoming Liberty City Health Fair. DOCS will again this year offer a completely free health screening including everything from dental stations to traditional health checkups. Over the years DOCS has also contributed books and toys for hundreds of children in need. The Rotary Club of Miami has supported this program in the past and will continue to do so. This year’s event will take place on December 8.
- Diane Landsberg read to us a card from a TBM Scholarship recipient telling us how grateful she is for her scholarship.
- Give Miami Day is Nov 15th. For 24 hours you can show your support by donating to our TBM Scholarship Trust. Go to https://givemiamiday.org and search for "The Rotary Club of Miami Foundation" and enter your information. Forms will also be available at our meeting that you can fill out in advance.

- Angela Deggs was pleased to announce that she has tickets to Australia for the Formula 1 race.
- Linda Singer was glad to see Dr. Ted and our friend Gary Sisler;
- Marcia Brod has thrilled over her daughter’s April wedding in Gainesville and glad that she has little work to do (on the wedding);
- Noreen Timoney was looking forward to the Heart Walk;
- Robin Shelley was very excited about the UM Homecoming, and his and Susie’s 50th anniversary. Congratulations!
- Diane Landsberg was pleased with the success of Sunday’s Brunch, and announced that she is going to India for Polio Plus!
- Angel Rodriguez is proud to celebrate his and Felicita’s 48th anniversary and his 50th year as a US Marine (Once a Marine, Always a Marine), and today is also his birthday!
Our Speaker was introduced by Robert Hill:
Frank Hernandez, our speaker today, has a great affinity towards those with heart conditions as he himself has experienced the great loss of his father to a heart condition. Following a career as a police officer he was asked to chair the American Heart Association 2018 Heart Walk. He discovered police officers, like firefighters, have an increased risk of heart problems, and heart disease. The reason stems from the additional stress they encounter, as well as the chemicals they are in contact with.
Robert explained the health strategy, focus on nutrition and public health initiatives of the American Heart Association. Not only do they assist with Heart Health issues, but also with public housing, cholesterol lowering medications, lung health, and many other issues. The American Heart Association believes it is an overall commitment to health that will reduce the incidence of heart related issues. He wants us to keep in mind the Heart Walk and how important it is. Robert says he will be there at 4:30 AM and invites us, our families and even our pets to join in the low impact walk across the bridge and back (but we don’t have to arrive until 8:00 AM).
50/50
The 50/50 drawing started at $263 and sold $88 today, with a total pot for today of $351. Thank you Renel for handling the ticket sales. The first ticket drawn belonged to Diane Landsberg. Diane proceeded to pick the Ace of Spades and won the $175 jackpot! The raffle starts over next week with a fresh deck of cards.
4-Way Test
The meeting closed with Randy Lichtman leading us in the 4-Way Test of the Things We Think, Say or Do.
