THE ROTE – SEPTEMBER 5TH 2019
The Miami Yacht Club

 

WELCOME - President Norby Rudel rang the bell and welcomed everyone to the meeting.

INVOCATION – President Norby asked everyone to bow their heads in silence for 30 seconds to remember those who lost their lives in Hurricane Dorian which struck the islands the week before.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE – Dave Anderson led club members in the Pledge.

VISITORS & GUESTS – None today

BIRTHDAYS & ANNIVERSARIES - Norman Kassoff is celebrating his 89th Birthday, Dave Anderson has been in Rotary 17 years and Arlene Terrinoni has been a member for 3 years.

 

HAPPY $$$$ – Collected by Dave Skinner:

  • Renel Noel – was happy that he had been in Haiti and been befriended by two young ladies!

  • Marcia Brod – Happy to be going on vacation touring National Parks and cities out west;

  • Tim Ryan – Happy that he was vacationing in Greece, cruising the islands;

  • Robin & Susan Shelley – Sympathy and empathy for Grand Bahama Island and Abaco. On a Happy note – Robin has been elected to the Board of the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind;

  • Linda Singer – Happy that she and Dave Skinner went to Oklahoma for their grandson’s wedding;

  • Diane Landsberg – Happy to give a check to the Bahama’s relief fund;

  • Noreen Timoney – announced that she and Shirley Pardon were selling raffle tickets on behalf of the Miami Woman’s Club for two tickets to the Broadway series to benefit Operation Smile – performing surgery on cleft lips and cleft palates of children;

  • Randy Lichtman – Happy because of things going on at Miami-Dade College;

  • Robert Bull – happy that his wife Stephanie had come today. Also happy that he was able to present Tim Ryan with the Silver Dollar that he won in an earlier drawing;

  • Dave Skinner – Happy to be back from Oklahoma!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • Area Governor Diane Landsberg updated the club on the arrangements made for getting supplies to the Bahamas. Rotary has arranged for a ship to leave at the weekend to take supplies bought with money donated to the fund to the Bahamas for distribution to the worst hit areas. Rotary has an organization on the ground so that every $ raised and every item taken will be used directly by the people in need.

  • Diane also announced the set up of three new Rotaract clubs. Over 200 interested students showed up for the Rotaract informational meeting at University of Miami.

  • President Norby said that he was very proud of our District 6990 for our accomplishments in times of need.

  • There will be a Soccer Clinic taking place on Saturday Sept 15. Six Rotarians have signed up to attend.

  • Norby also announced that on September 22 Community Service Chair Robert Bull had arranged for a Milk & Honey community outreach project. Details will be circulated by email.

  • The Bay Cleanup is scheduled for September 22 also.

  • Rotaract will be meeting for brunch at Diane’s house with a pinning ceremony taking place too.

 

GUEST SPEAKER - CHAD BERNSTEIN from “GUITARS OVER GUNS” – was introduced by Marcia Brod

This is an organization set up by Chad to get at risk children off the streets and give them an alternative by giving them music. The idea formed after he went to a juvenile detention center and saw how the kids interacted when music was introduced into the program. Everyone was participating with an energy not shown by any other talk or program.

He then set up his corporation, taking this concept into schools here in Miami and then into Chicago to show the kids an alternative to life on the streets where their probability of being shot or maimed was extremely high.

They are now adding a Mental Health program to this as many of the kids are very disturbed by their early life that unless addressed they cannot progress into any meaningful adult life.

Marcia Brod then donated a Gibson guitar to Chad that she had had since her teens for his program. He was thrilled to receive this.

President Norby presented his speaker certificate and thanked him for a very interesting and informative talk.

50/50 DRAW. We started with $2,229; $195 was collected today, total now $2,424.

Arlene Terrinoni had the winning ticket but failed to draw the Ace of Spades.

President Norby thanked all the working Rotarians collectively.

FOUR WAY TEST was recited and President Norby rang the bell for the end of the meeting.
