The Rote – August 16, 2018
The Miami Yacht Club
President Dave Skinner quieted the lively crowd enough to open the August 16, 2018 meeting. Marcia Brod provided the invocation and Angel Rodriguez led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Guests and Visitors:
Bunny Uriarte had the challenging charge of introducing our 16 visitors, most from far-flung lands such as Italy, Switzerland, London, Mexico and Russia.
Many of the visitors were members of eClub Italy South and Rotary Club Bologna Sud. The group was in Miami prior to taking a cruise:
- Fabio & Rebeca Castrovillari from Zug, Switzerland;
- Stefano Ducceschi from Naples, Italy, President of Rotary eClub Italy South 2100, and wife Raffaella d’Errico, also a member of the eClub;
- Giovanni Scognamiglio, Past President of Rotary eClub Italy South 2100;
- Stefania Galdiero, Professor at the University of Naples;
- Gianmichele Scognamiglio, an Italian Interactor;
- Fabio d’Errico from Naples;
- Giovanna Sabena of Bologna, Italy;
- Amelia Luca, member of the Rotary Club of Bologna Sud.
Other guests included:
- Jennifer Galeano, a guest of Bunny Uriarte;
- Helen De Winter (Shirley Pardon’s daughter);
- District Membership Chair Roberto Ruvalcaba and his guests:
- Carlos Tornel of ACAD;
- Antonio Saab of Libezza;
- Olesya Lesina and Randall Sanz, guests of Norby Rudel.
Happy $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ were collected by Bunny Uriarte:
- Amelia Bonilla collected Happy Dollars and members Marcia Brod, Robin Shelley, Susan Shelley, Randy Litchman, Angela Deggs, Amelia Bonilla, President Dave and Arlene Terrinoni all added to their EREY donation commitments with their news & announcements.
Announcements:
President Dave announced upcoming events that included the free Rotary University on Aug. 25 and a Rotary Leadership Institute on Sept. 29. The Club’s Peace Conference has been moved to January 26, 2019.
Most importantly, there will be no lunch at the Yacht Club this coming Thursday, Aug. 23. The Club will meet on that evening at Seasons 52 in Coral Gables at 6 pm. Past President Phil made a short speech on the importance of Every Rotarian Every Year.
A birthday cake was brought out for Past President and former District Governor Robin Shelley. Even the Italians serenaded Robin with “Happy Birthday” in Italian.
Program:
President-elect Norby Rudel introduced the guest speaker, former member and long-time friend of the Club George Dubec.
George is a man of many seasons. He started his career in corporate marketing and moved to Florida where he became a technology pioneer and networker. He worked in radio, entertainment, multi-level marketing, social media, publishing and even taught flamenco dancing.
George discussed his new book on networking and said that follow-up is the most important aspect of successful networking. His book also focuses on team building and branding.
Shirley Pardon’s daughter, Helen De Winter, had the first 50/50 ticket drawn but did not pull the ace. But everyone in attendance was a winner at this delightful luncheon!
The meeting ended with the recitation of the Four-Way Test of the Things We Think, Say or Do.
