The Miami Yacht Club
President Phil Seipp called the first meeting of June to order and welcomed everyone to the meeting.
Robin Shelley gave an invocation and Scott Richey led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag.
Guests and Visitors were introduced by Angela Deggs:
- George Arias came to Miami from NY some 20 years ago. He is a VP with Merrill Lynch and is checking out Rotary to see if it can meet his desire to take part in the community;
- Keith Gregor is a Senior Financial Advisor with Mellig Group, LLC. He is also looking to get more involved in the community.
The Rotary Club of Miami should easily meet the needs of both of our guests – hope they consider joining!!!!
Announcements:
- June 14 is the Installation dinner for incoming president Dave Skinner. It will be held at the PBA Hall and starts at 6:00pm. Everyone be sure to RSVP and help Dave start off his year with a big turnout. There is NO LUNCH MEETING on the 14th;
- July 4th will be another fantastic gathering at the home of Don and Maria Van Orsdel. We will gather to enjoy Independence Day, fireworks and their hospitality. RSVPs will be required;
- Membership renewal forms have been distributed and many have been received. If you have not returned your form, please do so immediately;
- The transfer of the TBM Trust to Northern Trust will take place shortly. A TBM Alumni June newsletter is being prepared for mailing and the Club’s Foundation will be matching all contributions up to $15,000 over the next three months.
Happy $$$$$$$$$$$$$ contributions, at the request of International Service Chair Robert Bull, will be sent to victims of the devastating volcano eruption in Guatemala. Amelia Bonilla collected Happy $$$ today:
- Amelia was happy to report that her nephew made a healthy arrival into the world this past week;
- Robert Bull contributed to the victims in Guatemala;
- Dave Skinner is looking forward to having completed his installation dinner speech in eight days;
- Randy Lichtman is heading out on vacation to Colorado and Wisconsin. If anyone is interested, there is a Toastmasters Speak-a-Thon from 12-5 at the Pinecrest Library on Saturday, June 9;
- Diane Landsberg shared Karla Richey’s Miami Kids Magazine and the complimentary Rotary ad on the back cover;
- Marcia Brod was happy to be back home after a wonderful week in NYC. She reported that there were no mishaps all week on the four flight (60 steps) walk up (and down) to the apartment they were staying in – it was good exercise;
- Robin Shelley has returned from an enjoyable cruise;
- Angela Deggs was happy to share that she has been nominated to the Board of Directors of the YMCA;
- Karla Santos was happy to get away from work which has been extremely busy and get back to a Rotary meeting. We’ve missed you Karla;
- Norby Rudel is happy to have finally cleared out his home by having a profitable yard sale. He made about $2,000 and enjoyed meeting a wide variety of people. He also will be singing again this coming Wednesday at Anthony’s in Coral Gables;
- Tim Ryan was looking forward to a couple of business opportunities in Milwaukee and Washington D.C. He is also looking forward to the delivery of a new-to-him set of wheels – a 1994 military Humvee;
- Phil Seipp is excited that his Rotary year is coming to a close.

- Kea Gorden is a Planned Giving Officer with The Rotary Foundation. She came to the Foundation with a rich international, service-oriented background and a passion for making the world a better place;
- At the 1917 convention, outgoing Rotary president Arch Klumph proposed setting up an endowment “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” That one idea, and an initial contribution of $26.50, set in motion a powerful force that has transformed millions of lives around the globe;
- The endowment has six areas of interest that its efforts are focused on: 1) providing clean water 2) supporting education 3) fighting disease 4) saving mothers and children 5) growing local economies and 6) promoting peace;
- Annual gifts to the Foundation help people around the globe live better lives today. Planned gifts to Rotary’s Endowment support the same life-changing programs forever;
- You can build your own Rotary Legacy by contributing a qualifying amount to the Endowment and create your own named fund. Funds can be designated to a specific project and reports are sent to one’s heirs on the fund’s results;
- A commitment through a Will or through estate planning will be invested and distributions will be returned to the District of the donor’s origin;

First draw for the big pot went to Robert Bull. Robert was the winner of last year’s big prize, but it was not to be, for today at least. We are down to 17 cards and are drawing for half of $1400!
Dave Skinner led everyone in the 4-Way Test to close out another wonderful meeting.
