Miami Yacht Club
President Dave Skinner welcomed everyone to today’s meeting. Jay Almeida gave an invocation and Norman Kassoff led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.
Visitors and Guests were introduced by Robert Bull:
- Nora Tenney is a Miamian who still lives in her childhood home in Miami Shores. She was a guest and longtime friend of member Renel Noel;
- Kirk Clark is the Development Manager of the Children’s Home Society. He has returned to Miami and is enjoying another day in paradise by visiting the club for lunch.
Announcements:
- The 50/50 raffle pot is now up to $959, with only 22 cards remaining in the deck. Get your tickets early and often;
- The District’s Rotary University has been scheduled for Saturday, August 24. The event is free and is a rewarding day of training for all Rotarians;
- Thursday, June 20 will be an evening event to celebrate the installation of incoming president Norby Rudel. The event will be held at the Miami Police Benevolent Association Hall, 2300 NW 14th Street. The reception starts at 5:30, with dinner at 7:00pm. Members use one meal ticket, guests $25. RSVP by June 12;
- Thursday, June 27 – luncheon meeting at the Yacht Club and a chance for President Dave Skinner recognize those who have helped during this past Rotary year;
- July 4th – Annual Independence Day Celebration at the home of Don and Maria Van Orsdel. Details to follow;
- Membership renewal forms have been distributed. Please return to Treasurer Phil Seipp as soon as possible.
Happy $$$$$$$$$$$$$ were collected by Amelia Bonilla:
- Amelia Bonilla is looking forward to a meeting with Interact Club Sponsor Randy Jimenez at Miami Senior High to discuss the students’ plans for the future;
- Jay Almeida praised Robert Smith for his generous payment of debts for all this year’s graduates at Morehouse College. He also appreciated the Instagram posts of Amelia Bonilla and Angela Deggs;
- Randy Lichtman is heading to Wisconsin for his son’s upcoming wedding. He and Susan will take a leisurely drive back to Miami;
- Renel Noel is extremely happy today. He enjoyed hanging out with Norby and Maria Rudel during Norby’s audition for a new gig at Books & Books in Coral Gables. He was also thrilled to have Nora visiting with him today;
- Robin and Susan Shelley were sad to be missing the next two meetings, but they will be in Hamburg, Germany enjoying the company of thousands of Rotarians at the International Convention;
- Noreen Timoney was glad to have attended the 200 Club of Miami dinner meeting and is excited to have become a member of the organization;
- Kathy Cahill was excited that her daughter-in-law is now an RN and is working in a neo-natal ICU. She is also going to be grandma for the third time;
- Norby Rudel is looking forward to enjoying every moment at the Rotary International Convention in Hamburg;
- Marcia Brod was cheering on the Miami Marlins – they are on a five-game winning streak.
Member Focus – Tim Ryan
Member Since: 1983 He has been a member of four clubs; Livermore and San Jose in CA, Orlando and Miami.
Why did you join Rotary? A friend suggested that it would be a good career move to meet the “movers and shakers” in the community.
Rotary Positions Held: President, Board Member, Speaker Chair and Community Service Chair.
Recognition and Awards: Paul Harris Fellows (3x), many awards for professional service.
Family: He and wife Sue have two sons and 3 grandchildren who live in California.
Education: A B.S. degree from the University of California at Berkeley, MPA from Cal State, 2001 Harvard JFK School of Public Service.
Professional: Started off as a deputy sheriff in Alameda, California and ended his full-time work as head of the Miami-Dade County jail. He currently does consulting and also is called upon as an expert witness.
Something we didn’t know: Tim owns two gold mines in California which were originally claimed by his Grandfather in 1926.
This is just a small snapshot of the wonderful stories Tim shared with everyone. He has a seemingly unlimited library of stories to tell and every one was fun to listen to!
Program – Hurricane Readiness:
- Diane Landsberg and Noreen Timoney shared some important tips on what everyone in our community needs to do every year to be prepared for Hurricane Season;
- Noreen shared the “Remember the 7 “P” slogan”: “Prior Proper Preparation Prevents Pitiful Poor Performance (or disaster or worse)”;
- Here is a short list of to-dos:
- Have a small bag of clothing and toiletries needed for a few days if needed to evacuate.
- Pack about three days’ worth of each of your prescriptions, which should last until you can get to a pharmacy that’s open. If you need larger items, such as an oxygen tank, make sure you have a portable version.
- Pack an extra phone charger in case you’re fortunate enough to have electricity, and a portable battery pack in case you’re not. Also stash a long-lasting LED flashlight. Pack a small hand-cranked or battery-operated AM/FM radio (with extra batteries).
- Fill a zip-top waterproof bag with photocopies of your birth certificate; driver’s license; Social Security and Medicare cards; power of attorney and will; any marriage, adoption or naturalization certificates; proof of address; insurance, medical and immunization records; and information about your credit and ATM cards.
- Bottled water is essential. Don’t wait until the mad rush to buy cases of water. Granola or energy bars are great because they are small and filling, and they come in a variety of flavors. Fill plastic bottles with water and freeze. If power goes out, it will keep your freezer colder longer and when it melts you have water to drink. Crackers, peanut butter, granola, cereal, tuna, apples, oranges, etc. are good things to have on hand.
- Propane Gas - Have on hand an extra tank to prepare food on a gas grill.
- Cash on hand - In addition to enough money for a few days, include small bills. Banks close and ATM’s run out of money. You will need cash to pay a day-laborer or yardman to help clear your driveway, roof and yard. If you need to buy something out of a vending machine, you should have a roll of quarters.
50/50 Raffle totaled $1,049 by the end of the meeting. Jay Almeida had the first pick, but no luck picking the Ace of Spades. The pot continues to rise….stay tuned!!!
