Brief Announcements

September 17 was the International Beach cleanup.  It was a great success! Many folks helped clean up at our meeting location – the Miami Yacht Club.  Hope everyone enjoyed the photos that have been distributed.  Any additional pictures should be sent to Robert Bull or Jay Almeida.  

 

Sunday, October 9^th – there will be a Baby Shower for Amelia Bonilla, and her soon-to-be new addition to her family, at 2:00pm Diane Landsberg’s home. This is a coed event and a RSVP is required

 

Saturday October 15^th is Interact Youth Conference at MDC Downtown.  Check your email and please volunteer to help at this important event.  Help is needed with registration and the day’s program.  Lunch will be provided.  Remember, these young people are our future Rotarians in 10 years!  Please let Diane Landsberg know if you can help.

 

Website – The website has been updated and is a good resource to check out our meeting schedule.

 

Little Libraries - We have received notice that five more Little Libraries are being provided to us by Rotary International, in addition to 15 more for the district. We need suggestions for possible locations and additional volunteers to help with installation.

 

Board Meeting - Last night we had our monthly meeting of the RCOM board of directors. President Brian is very grateful to the team, who spend hours each month preparing for activities, analyzing and resolving issues, and managing responsibly how the club’s funds are spent. Be sure to express your gratitude to them the next time you see them and, when needed, don’t wait to be asked but volunteer your services. Together we are a stronger and better organization.

 

 

 

Our speaker today was Eva Lizardo, a 24-year employee of the Department of Environmental Resources Management with Miami-Dade County.  She does community outreach to inform residents of DERM’s work and its importance.

 

 

DERM’s Mission is to balance today’s needs through responsible governance, education and conservation to preserve our environment for tomorrow.  The foundation of DERM began in the early 60s, in part, to address a zoning variance request for construction of a large petroleum refinery on a property near Biscayne Bay.  Imagine what our Bayfront view would have been if the refinery had been built!

 

A Miami Dade Environmental Protection Ordinance in April 1962 established minimum, county-wide standards for the reasonable control and regulation of activities which are causing or may cause pollution or contamination of air, water, soil and property as required for the protection and preservation of the public health, safety and welfare. 

 

DERM has wide-ranging responsibilities and constantly is monitoring environmental concerns in our community.  It is vital in the efforts to keep our community safe and healthy for the years to come.

 

 

 

President Brian was happy to contribute $17 to match the 17 points scored by Texas A&M against the University of Miami – Go Aggies! 

Marcia Brod was happy to be back from a wonderful cruise on the Ohio River, a part of the country she had never been to before.  She invited everyone to join her on her 2023 cruise on the Columbia and Snake Rivers.

Diane Steiber was happy to contribute to the Little Haiti Girls Soccer Team and also enjoyed today’s presentation.

Diane Landsberg was thrilled to share that the Club has been able to order 40 more soccer balls for the Little Haiti team and some actually have some pink on the balls.

Noreen Timony contributed her funds partially in memory of Renel Noel for his work with the Little Haiti Soccer team, for today’s presentation and the Women’s Club finally returning to its building.

Robin and Susan Shelley contributed $9+ in honor of UM’s 9 points and also for the soccer team. Go Canes!

Shirley Pardon was happy to share that the Miami Women’s Club will be contributing $1,000 to the Little Haiti Girls’s Soccer Club.
