Saturday, 1/28/2023 Tree planting: At Coral Estates Park, 1405 SW 97th Ave., on January 28th starting at 10:00 in the morning, we will be planting 315 trees. Water & juices will be available, plus light snacks, at no charge. Please let us know if you will be attending to ensure that we have sufficient supplies for all. Buy golf ball drop tickets, which will benefit the RI Foundation and will count towards EREY. You may bring your check for same (the cost is $25 each golf ball) to the next in person meeting on January 19th.

Speaker:
Today’s speaker is our former member Angel Rodriguez, Executive Director of the Armed Forces Service Center, which operates the Military Lounge at Miami International Airport. He is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. and worked many years in corporate America.
Over 26 years ago, the USO had a small military presence at Miami International Airport. It closed in 1996 due to lack of funding. In 1998, the Armed Forces Services Center started as a charity organization. It operates as an all-volunteer center.
Angel discussed the funding and sponsors and how the demand for the center’s services has increased greatly from pre-pandemic times. That greater demand for food, snacks, furniture, and other assets, has been accompanied by a drop in some funding due to the closing of the businesses of some sponsors during the pandemic. He recognized contributions from our club, the Shelleys, and the Brods.
The lounge is open from 9:00 to 5:00 daily and needs volunteers who can commit to working two four-hour shifts on the same day each month.
At the end of his speech, we were glad to learn that Angel is now available to rejoin our club.
