President Oliver Ruiz welcomed everyone to the meeting.  He thanked those who attended last week’s social event at Seasons 52 in Coral Gables.  It was a fun time for all. 
Oliver reported that another productive gala meeting was held and thanked Diane Landsberg for hosting the meeting at her home.  Telephone conference call meetings will be held in future weeks. Anyone interested in taking part should contact Oliver for further information. Robin and Susan Shelley will host the next in-person meeting on Tuesday, November 1.
Shirley Pardon gave an invocation and Dave Skinner led everyone in the Pledge.
Treasurer Phil Seipp was glad to present contributions from the Club’s Foundation. 
  • $500 to the Armed Forces Military Lounge at Miami International Airport for hygiene kits.
  • Six $25 gift certificates were purchased for use by the Children’s Home Society of Florida.  Member Karen Guy thanked the Foundation and Club for its generosity.
The Club is collecting men’s white crew socks for Operation Sock Drop, an initiative of Feed My Sheep. The socks will be given to homeless individuals in Miami. Diane Landsberg, Linda Singer & Dave Skinner have contributed so far.  Bring the socks to upcoming meetings and they will be passed on.
Robin Shelley shared information regarding ways to help with Haitian Hurricane Relief.
  • Robin shared that Diane Landsberg purchased several carts of goods for the Club and while checking out at the store created interest in fellow shoppers who contributed to her efforts. 
  • The District is collecting funds through their Robbins Fund.  Money collected and earmarked for Haitian relief will be sent to the Rotary District in Haiti. Checks can be made payable to the “District 6990 Robbins Fund” and brought to an upcoming meeting.
  • Our own Renel Noel will be packing goods to send to Haiti.  He has contacts that accept the goods and ensure that they are distributed to those in need.  His non-profit, Friends of Humanity, is accepting cash donations as well.
Oliver welcomed our one guest, Andrew Miller.  Andrew is the son of member Rick Miller and is home to celebrate his dad’s 60th birthday (OMG – you’re that old Rick????).  Andrew is living in Greenville SC and working for the local hockey team. 
Shirley Pardon reminded everyone of the luncheon offered on Sunday, November 13 on the Fathom cruise ship. It will include lunch, a tour of the ship and information regarding a possible cruise/volunteer opportunity. The lunch and program should run from 11-1:30pm.

  • Diane Landsberg shared that member Michael Hilsbos will be returning to Germany for work reasons – his everyday presence will be missed;
  • Phil Seipp enjoyed, and recommended, a wonderful vacation in Bar Harbor Maine, including time spent in Arcadia National Park;
  • Robin Shelley was glad to have Michael Nobel speaking at the club today. He is also thrilled that Michael will be attending the gala in March;
  • Michael Hilsbos shared that his trip to Germany will be for an extended time, but he will certainly stay in touch and will be back for the gala;
  • Karen Guy was grateful for the gift cards for the Children’s Home Society and also was glad that the Society’s big gala will be held this week;
  • Tina Moore shared that a book she authored is being made into a TV mini-series;
  • Renel Noel said that his project in Haiti is still standing and he is working hard to provide relief supplies to the many people in need in the area.
  • Oliver added $20 Happy Dollars on behalf of the absent Rick Hernandez.  Rick’s contribution was his way of basking in the glory of FSU’s win over UM.
  • Marcia Brod thanked Renel Noel for his work getting her sprinkler system back up and running properly.

  • Lunch meeting Thursday, October 20 – Speaker is Jim Morris, Head Coach of the University of Miami baseball team;
  • Evening meeting Thursday, October 27 – Northern Trust Bank in Coral Gables;
  • Interact/Peace Conference Saturday, November 5 at Miami Dade College – volunteers are needed;
Our Speaker
  • Robin Shelley introduced our speaker, honorary club member and friend, Dr. Michael Nobel.
  • Michael was generous enough to waive his speaker fee for today’s meeting (thank you!!)
  • He talked about the increasing concerns for our aging population and our health system. Statistics show that the Japanese have the longest life expectancy at 85.  In the U.S. the life expectancy is 79.
  • Longevity involves many factors and includes genetic makeup and life style.
  • It is imperative that one keeps informed. There are innovations in diagnostic tests made daily.
  • In the future, drugs will be tailor-made for an individual based on their own genetic makeup.
Norm Kassoff led the group in the 4-Way Test.
