President Noreen Timoney rang the bell to begin the second meeting of this new Rotary year. She
welcomed everyone and thanked all those who helped make the last Rotary year a success and also
thanked everyone for their continuing support this year. There were forty two in attendance including visiting Rotarian from India and Israel.

Moment of Reflection: Today’s moment of reflection was led by Priscilla Dames. She asked everyone to take a moment to close their eyes and reflect on the great challenges the youth in our community are facing in so many areas. She then suggested we take a moment to reflect on ourselves – how far we have come in our personal and professional lives and think about at least one thing we are thankful for.

Prayers requested for Eytan McManus: President Noreen asked that we all offer our prayers and sincere good wishes for David McManus and his family, whose son, Eytan, was in a horrible automobile accident and is in serious condition in the hospital.

 

Pledge of Allegiance: Arlene Terrinoni led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

Birthdays and Rotary Anniversaries; Birthday well wishes go out to Susan Shelley for her birthday on the 19th. 

Announcements
The City of Miami is celebrating its 125th birthday on July 28th and a lot of events are planned. Steve Dutton shared an event that will be held on July 27th at Miami Dade College featuring a panel of local historians and a reception afterwards at the Waldorf. Details to follow;

 

Noreen mentioned Miami 125 and the history behind the City launching this year-long initiative.
Events connected to Miami 125 will be carried out throughout the year;

 

Rotary Club of Miami Happenings:

New member introduction July 16th will be at Diane Landsberg’s home. All are welcome.

 

Evening Satellite Club meeting: Tuesday, July 20th at 5:30 – log in information is the same as weekly meetings. Please check out our Satellite members with a visit online;

 

Investment Club is ongoing. Contact Dave Anderson for details;

 

Community Service projects:
o Back packs will be distributed to school children, including those in the Girl Scout Troop the Club Sponsors
o Baby products – on going, including products being collected for the baby shower of the first baby born on July 28th at Jackson Memorial Hospital

 

Environmental Projects will begin in September

Keynote Speaker: Today’s Speaker was introduced by Diane Landsberg, who has known the speaker, her stepson, since he was six years old!

As President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of South Florida, David Landsberg oversees a $160 million organization with 3100 employees that are dedicated to helping people with disabilities and other barriers to work to gain greater independence through employment. Having served on the Board of Directors for 18 years prior to being named CEO in March 2014, Mr. Landsberg is committed to growing Goodwill’s capacity to provide rehabilitation, on-the-job training, work experience, and job placement services for the region’s 457,000 working-aged people with a disability. Goodwill South Florida is a nonprofit that creates hope, opportunities and a place to
belong for people with disabilities and other barriers to employment. They achieve this mission by providing opportunities for people with physical and intellectual challenges and other barriers and help those they serve increase productivity and move towards greater independence through job training, employment and job placement.

Entrepreneurial divisions of Goodwill South Florida include:
o Apparel & Flag Manufacturing – sewing uniforms and internment flags for the
U.S. military;
o Custodial Services – numerous government office buildings
o Laundry Services – focusing on services for the health care industry
o Third Party Logistic Services: Additional business services that employ 1,200 people with disabilities.

 

Noreen thanked our speaker David Landsberg for speaking with us and for his wonderful service to our
community. She presented him with the virtual certificate of appreciation and told him that we would
be planting a tree in his honor at our next tree planting.

 

Phil Seipp was glad to report $1,500 in additional donations to TBM as a result of the latest newsletter;
Marcia Brod is looking forward to a long weekend in Daytona with her whole family;
Robin Shelley is contributing $19 to celebrate 7/19 – Susan’s birthday! They are heading to a weekend in the Keys and dinner at Chef Michael’s in Islamorada –key lime pie makes a great birthday dessert!
Steve Dutton was happy he met David Landsberg and is looking forward to Friday’s Meet and Greet with new members;

Diane Landsberg is grateful for David stepping in at the last minute as today’s speaker.  It was much appreciated;
Michael Kesti shared that a District Marlins Night will be on August 13 and you can now purchase a Rotary license tag;
Patti Urban was so glad to be with Rotarians that share her passion to serve others;
Noreen Timoney thanked our speaker, guests and everyone helping at today’s meeting.
