President Norby Rudel called the meeting to order. Norm Kassoff gave a special commemorative speech and invocation for Veterans Day, introducing us to the touching concept of a set empty table representing the missing veteran who could never return. Norm also led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests. Tim Ryan introduced:

  • Erick Young, a guest of Patrick Aliu and an employee of PSA Management;

  • Olga Hernandez, a prospective member who is a child advocate manager for Miami-Dade Circuit Court in the Guardian Ad Litem for Children Program (thank you, Internet, for leading her to us);

  • Jocelyn Belizaire, a visiting Rotarian from Club de Petionville, Haiti, who is a Haitian diplomat and has participated with our club numerous times; and

  • Brenda Gibbs, a Tallahassee resident and a guest of Shirley Pardon.

Today’s happy dollars are being donated to the Armed Forces Service Center, Inc., which operates the military hospitality lounge at Miami International Airport. A total of $232 was collected today.

  • Diane Landsberg gave a $25 check to Foundation. Last Saturday she hosted a bridal shower for Jay’s daughter, Stephanie.

  • Randy Lichtman enjoyed his trip last weekend to New York to visit his son Leo.

  • Tim Ryan amused us greatly with a very funny fictitious letter.

  • Robert Bull was happy about his wife Stephanie’s health.

  • Robin Shelley was glad that our District Governor, Ray Williams, was visiting our club today. He highly recommended that we see the movie “Midway.”

  • Dave Skinner received recognition for his giving to Rotary International. District Governor Ray Williams presented him with a Paul Harris Fellow + 7 pin.

  • Noreen Timoney was glad to have DG Ray Williams visiting us today and thoroughly enjoyed Tim’s jokes.

  • Phil Seipp was happy.

  • Brian Tschirhart announced the upcoming births of his 13th and 14th grandchildren.

  • Jaime Tobin related a few mishaps on a trip to New York.

  • Norby Rudel was happy first lady, Maria Rudel, and DG Ray were here.

  • Patrick Aliu reported that his wife underwent serious surgery.

Business Announcements

  • Golf Ball Drop tickets are being sold by David Anderson and Diane Landsberg. The proceeds benefit Rotary International and our District.

  • Norby thanked Diane Landsberg for arranging a fantastic social at Vinos in the Grove last Monday with lovely wine, interesting people and great conversation.

  • The next board meeting will be held on November 21 at 10:30 a.m. at the Miami Yacht Club.

Diane Landsberg introduced our District Governor, Ray Williams.

DG Ray recounted the training he and all the other district governors in the world attended where he met Rotary International President Daniel Maloney. President Maloney wants the Rotarians around the world to:

  • Increase our impact.

  • Expand our reach.

  • Engage the Rotarians.

  • Increase our ability to adapt and to stay relevant.

District 6990 (our district) has the following goals for 2019-2010:

  • Grow membership by 10%.

  • Add 8 satellite clubs for people who can’t meet for breakfast or lunch.

  • Add 3 new Interact clubs.

  • Add 3 new Rotaract clubs.

  • To support our giving to Rotary International Foundation to support global and district grants by giving an average of $2,500 per club for Polio Plus and $200 per Rotarian for annual fund.

  • To have 100 new Paul Harris fellows.

Ray would like to see that clubs try change and that they tell their Rotary story. He recognized our club as meeting both of those goals.

We should have our elevator speeches ready to tell people about Rotary.

Ray presented two banners to our club: one for achieving 100% EREY contributions, and one for achieving 100% giving.

District Conference will happen April 24 – April 27, 2020 aboard a ship to the Bahamas. There will be several service projects taking place then.

Ray encouraged everyone to have the Club Locator app on their mobile phones to locate other clubs to visit. Be sure to call ahead to verify the meeting date, time and place.

What makes Rotary unique is our Foundation and how Rotarians connect with one another internationally, working together on successful projects. Rotary empowers ordinary Rotarians to do extraordinary things.
